People sometimes ask me: how do you do it? A more-than-full-time job, and volunteering on top of that. To be honest, I occasionally ask myself the same question. But every time I answer it, I realize it doesn’t really feel like a choice. It feels like something I genuinely want to do.
At LUSH, we are deeply connected to the communities around us. That’s not just something we say because it sounds good—it’s something we truly believe in. And for me personally, that means giving something back. Not because I have to, but because it gives me a sense of purpose.
Running as a Way to Connect
One of the initiatives I’m involved with is the Running Project. Every year, on the first Sunday of January, more than 20 volunteer trainers come together to guide over 250 participants through a 12-week running program.
Some participants start as complete beginners and work towards running five kilometres without stopping. Others train for 10-kilometre races, half marathons, or even full marathons. It may sound straightforward, but the impact is anything but. Watching someone who was nervous about exercising again complete their first uninterrupted run after just a few weeks is incredibly rewarding. Their confidence grows, friendships are formed, and the atmosphere is always positive and supportive.
Sport has a remarkable effect on people, and being a small part of that journey is something that gives me an enormous amount of energy.
Supporting Young Talent
I am also involved with the Westland Young Talent Foundation. The foundation supports young people with exceptional talent who need financial assistance to continue pursuing their ambitions.
With that extra support, talented young athletes and creatives are given the opportunity to further develop their skills and chase their goals. Over the years, we have seen several young people achieve remarkable success in their chosen fields, and it is inspiring to play a role in helping them get there.
What It Gives Me
Volunteering is often described as something you do for others—and that’s absolutely true. But I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t acknowledge what it gives me in return.
It takes me outside my own bubble. I meet people I would never otherwise cross paths with. I discover different sides of myself beyond work, deadlines, and targets. And perhaps most importantly, it gives me a tremendous amount of positive energy.
The Westland Boxing Gala
As LUSH, we are also proud sponsors of the Westland Boxing Gala and have been involved in organising the event since its very first edition in 2019.
On 16 May 2026, local entrepreneurs from the Westland region will step into the ring to raise funds for Beukenrode Palliative Home Care & Hospice. Supporting initiatives like this perfectly reflects who we strive to be: present, engaged, and willing to roll up our sleeves for causes that are bigger than ourselves.
Life is busy for everyone these days. But being busy is not a reason not to make time for others. At least, it isn’t for me. It’s something that genuinely makes me happy.
Warm regards,
Susan van Schie
